In the UK/Northern Hemisphere, no vitamin D is made by your body from sun exposure during winter months, between October and late March/early April. Even though the sun can feel quite warm during autumn/spring, don’t be fooled thinking you can get all your vitamin D by being outside. During these months, the sun stays relatively low and the angle of the rays hitting your skin are not triggering vitamin D synthesis under the skin. So during winter months you body has to rely on the vitamin D stores that it has built up over the summer, if any, or on a supplement.

But before you reach for those supplements, you need to consider that to be able to optimise your vitamin D level properly, you need to know your current vitamin D status and then know what dose to take to get to the optimal level.

Supplementing without testing may just maintain a deficient level or you may be wasting your money if you don’t need to take that much, or even worse, you may be taking too much and increasing your level to toxic levels.
