  • This is what many Finns do in the winter to keep healthy - ice swimming! And of course there's also the weekly saunas throughout the year. These two past-times, coupled, can have pretty amazing effects in our bodies! (Note: I'm still to try ice swimming myself, even as a native Finn! 😀)

Temporary extremes in body temperature create stress in the body, but not the chronic and harmful "perceived" stress that is more or less an integral part of our modern society for most of us, but good short-lived physiological stress that is beneficial to our health. 🌊
This kind of thermal stress (or any stress caused by environmental and physical fluctuations from one extreme to another - e.g. short bursts of high intensity exercise), throws our physiology out of 'homeostasis' (or comfort zone) temporarily, challenging the nervous, endocrine (hormonal) and immune systems, and stimulating healthy adaptive mechanisms in the body. 🏋️‍♀️
Cold exposure also stimulates the vagus nerve and lowers sympathetic activation (fight or flight) and causes a shift toward increased parasympathetic activity (rest and digest). 💗 
So thermal physiological stress actually lowers psychological stress, hence increasing the feelings of emotional wellbeing.

For the past 2+ weeks I've been feeding only myself as hubs was on a business trip in Mexico.
🇲🇽 I now understand my single clients a little better who tell me that they can't often be bothered making an effort to cook for themselves, and rather just want to grab something quick.

I couldn't either! I've been snacking way too much, food's been my comforting friend while the house was empty. And if it was veggies that comforted me, it wouldn't matter so much but I've also polished a packet of ice lollies, a huge bag of crisps, a large bag of salty liquorice from Finland, a tray of (healthy and home made, at least) sweet potato chocolate brownies... They were calling my name, I swear!! 🙄😊 The veg has been much less appealing over the past two weeks! And I love veg!!! 🥦
Food is definitely for sharing and I've come to appreciate that if you live on your own it's so much harder to get motivated to cook from scratch and stay healthy.

I don't really have much wisdom for you (but I do have a lot of empathy though), apart from not buying crap so that it's not there "calling your name" ('Out of sight, out of mind' and all that!) and to cook big batches of dishes to freeze and keep in the fridge for later meals, so you don't have to cook every day. And add new ingredients to those leftovers so it doesn't feel like you're eating the same boring stuff for days. And, invite friends over to cook for. 🔪
This was broccauli risotto leftovers from the other night when I could be bothered to cook from scratch (swipe left). It's got riced cauliflower and broccoli, cauliflower leaves, chorizo, onion, red pepper, roasted purple carrots and some black GABA rice (@minvitauk) that I had cooked earlier. To that I mixed sustainably fished tinned tuna (@mscintheuk) and topped it with homemade beetroot and red cabbage sauerkraut. It was lovely and the only thing I missed was my husband to share it with me!

  • Who's heard of, or tried, GABA rice?

I've only came across it very recently, and of course had to get some! Black and red GABA rice by @minvitauk (swipe left).

GABA rice is rice that has been germinated to increase its GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) content. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps us relax. It increases the parasympathetic tone of the nervous system (the 'rest and digest' mode) that opposes the sympathetic, or the 'fight or flight' response.

Increased intake of GABA either from food or supplements* may improve sleep, reduce the feelings of anxiety and worry, calm the brain and relax the digestive tract, making your tummy happier and improving the digestion of foods. . *Note: in the UK GABA is classed as a medicinal product so you need a prescription to be able to supplement.

Here, I mixed some boiled GABA rice (mixed with butter) with some roasted sliced turnip and courgetti noodles, and leftover chicken and green beans. It was lush! 😋 .
